Hey all! I’m wondering if anyone knows how to make a midi controller with 24+ knobs where I can get the knobs to be assigned to anything on a vst? I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and I want to see about making one myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this and hope you all have/ are having a good one!

Bastl “60 knobs” kit is not expensive.

At around $215 not including shipping, OP might be better off buying something that's already assembled, unless they absolutely need all 60 knobs (it's more than double what they're looking for, so 60 might be a bit excessive). Here's some other potentially cheaper options as far as DIY, most of which use an Arduino chip, just like the Bastl 60 Knobs setup:

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for Ok cool. If I’m using that with a vst on my computer can I make any of the knobs respond to the virtual knobs (for lack of a better way of putting it) on the vst?

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for You might be able to build one like this with a Teensy 3.2, which has 20 analog inputs, which could each be assigned to one knob. The Teensy can act as a USB midi device out of the box too, which simplifies things a lot. A 3.5 or 3.6 has more analog inputs but may be overkill in other respects. You could instead consider using buttons to "page up and down" kinda like an octave up/down button works on a midi keyboard controller. That way you could have any number of 'soft' controls, and a limited number of hardware knobs. Sounds like a cool project either way!

Are you comfortable with coding? There is a good midi library that simplifies sending midi commands, but programming the Teensy/ microcontroller will be a project.

I've gotten into making midi controllers in the past year and really enjoy it.

Also multiplexers and pages\banks.

This is what I was going to say. Small arduino

Any Arduino with a couple of multiplexers can do this! Multiplexers each have (usually) 8 pins, then connects to one unique pin and a handful of other shared pins. So, in short, you have three Arduino pins to tell the multiplexers which of their pins to read, then one Arduino pin for each multiplexer to read what comes out of the multiplexer.

Since you want analog input, you’d put the three address pins on digital out pins, then the output of the multiplexers to analog pins. You’d only need six pins that way.

Multiplexers like the 4051 are really cheap and common — I see them for as little as $0.40 apiece when you buy 10. You can get a pack of Arduino Nanos three for ten bucks.

If I was in your situation I'd take the easy route and pick up a second hand BCR2000 for a hundred for 1 last update 2020/08/05 bucks or so. Unless doing a DIY project is a big part of the appeal of course.

Seconding this, but don't let it discourage you OP. Some slightly-funky looking, slightly crooked, one-of-a-kind controller that's only yours is cool.

Arduino Pro Micro is your friend! It can be recognized as a USB-MIDI device by your computer.

I've posted this before, but it's a good option if you want to save some the time it would take coding your own arduino https://shanteacontrols.com/

Might be worth looking into KSP controllers.

You can buy a Akai Midi Mix and rehouse it, make some better knobs etc. Really cheap and nice midi controller.
